GCS International

Collaborating to build first NFC payments app in the region

The Situation

GCS International is a leading FinTech payment processor in Latin America. As part of their technology roadmap, they needed to launch a new version of their mobile applications for Android and iOS for one of their products: tPago.

At the time, their mobile applications suite for this product had not been touched since their original launch and their internal team didn’t have a lot of experience in this domain. Furthermore, they were working on a tight schedule to relaunch a new core system and all of their resources were committed to getting that over the finish line.

The GBH Difference

Built to adapt to technology

At GBH, we see technology as a mechanism to achieve impact. What that means for us is that we don’t shy away from the right technology for the job just because we didn’t have experience with it before; while implementing the tPago product, we had to interact with several proprietary libraries to securely digitalize credit cards as well transact, using the NFC protocol, with points of sale.

A true extension of your team

The only way we work is by being a true extension of your team. We love challenges and overcoming them together as one team. While building tPago, we’ve gone from defining and selecting features to meeting with committee chairs to discuss product implementation results.

Committed not involved

Our team commits to the objectives and outcomes of the organizations we partner with. This means that we pull whatever resources are necessary to create the right team structure to guarantee excellent communication, planning, and execution. That spans from helping to refine requirements, setting pipelines and workflow, software architecture and execution, as well as co-managing project execution.

What We Did

Collaborate with the UX team

Our team collaborated with an external UX firm in what was the process we would follow to execute product development in an agile manner.

Define software architecture

We built the mobile product software architecture and defined the implementation strategy to guarantee low friction at integration points. At the moment, the GCS team was still building the new version of their core and we had to start executing the mobile product build in parallel to the core build.

Build and launch

Our team successfully integrated into the new core with very low friction as integration tests had been written to guarantee that the core API contracts were followed and that the application was working as expected.

Internal KPIs

Commitment

In agile projects, daily standups tend to become a place where commitments are made but rarely remembered the next day. We track compromises our team makes which has proven as a great way to calibrate estimation and utilization.

The Result

We helped GCS deploy the first mobile application with NFC payments in the region and to this day, continue to help them implement new features to scale transactions as well as to improve product stickiness.
